Maker Journal – Week 3

My experience with Scratch this week was enjoyable, but at times frustrating as well. It reminded me why coding can be so valuable for students. Using Scratch could be a great way to challenge students to demonstrate their learning. The challenge is accompanied by engaging learning activities. It incorporates problem solving and teaches students to persevere. The need to continually revise the code to get the desired outcomes gets students to think about how to make things better.

While creating the Aquarium scene, I thought how I could incorporate the moving sprites into a math lesson on Distance, Rate and Time. I would create challenges where students would need to use the D=RT formula to code sprites to “Catch” another. I would also challenge them to make ones disappear after travelling a specified distance. I’m sure it would be challenging since students would need to think of “distance” in terms of pixels, a unit they aren’t used to using.
